About SwissClimmo

A considerable amount of data are available on past and projected future climate in Switzerland. However, these datasets are large and complex, which severely impedes their use across the real-estate sector.

ClimmoSwiss has been established to bridge the gap between state-of-the-art climate science and accessible property-level information.

We apply our extensive geospatial data analysis and computing skills to provide high-quality and easy-to-interpret data on past and projected future climate at individual property locations for the first time.

SwissClimmo is a trading name of Thornton Geoscientific – a sole proprietorship established in 2025 by Dr. James Thornton. The company is based in village of Titterten, Basel–Landschaft.

James completed a PhD in Hydrogeology at the University of Neuchâtel in 2020. Prior to that, he spent four years developing natural hazard and risk models for the (re)insurance industry.

James has authored or co-authored 10 papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, and has contributed to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment process. In 2022, James received a prestigious “Editors’ Choice” award for a paper in the journal Water Resources Research (WRR).

James has also coordinated research networks and collaborated with international organisations like the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), and UNESCO. He serves on the Editorial Board of the journal Earth System Science Data (ESSD), and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
